I wish the article had dug into the history of how the British encouraged firearm ownership. This was opposed to the Spanish methods of colonialism. The Spanish forbade the colonists from bearing arms and were thus vulnerable to native uprisings, leading to the demise of the Spanish Empire. The same became true of the British once they began to try the same.

The most effective way to sedate the masses appears to be through "creature comforts." The Chinese were subjugated through opium. Today the masses are quelled through the comfort and ease afforded through technology.
