How Many Carry Factory vs Hand Loads

I saw a YouTube video the other day with a lawyer associated with one of the self defense insurance companies who said something to the effect of:
If a malicious prosecuting attorney discovers that you, as the self defender, have used handloads in your shooting, he will probably accuse you of crafting specially designed, particularly vicious rounds for creating instant painful death. This accusation could be instrumental in biasing a jury against you.
The statement, when taken at its face value and from a credible source, makes sense.

Question: How many of you folks carry factory vs hand loads?

I learned my lesson years ago using reloads while deer hunting. With the crosshairs on a nice buck, when I pulled the trigger all I heard was click. For those of you who may not know, deer don't stand around long at all after hearing that sound. Needless to say, even to this day, I only use reloads when shooting at paper:)

however, a case could also be made from buying reloaded ammo from a known source, such as a gun store, (or even online) as being with-in specs of factory ammo.

i buy such reloaded ammo, but i'll not use it in my carry gun(s), as a more than a few times, all i heard was a "click".

i nary want to depend on ANY reloaded ammo, over factory.

so home reloads or store bought reloads are both capable of going..."click".

however, too, one can buy factory fresh that is "hot" as well.

either in bullet weights, or grains, or even brand of powder, per the factory.

i think the better "debate" would be, "should you modify your carry gun, or leave it bone stock".

now from various websites i have watched regarding this, the consensus is leave it bone stock, otherwise, you made a "killing machine", over a self defense weapon.

I've been a reloader since about the early-mid 70's and used probably a couple hundred thousand reloads for both hunting and for competition in that time, and best I can remember never had a bad one. Maybe I've been lucky.

But I wouldn't load my EDC with reloads from anyone, anywhere, anytime ...... for exactly the reason the op mentioned in his post. Any smart prosecutor would make that his very first point ..... that you (the shooter) were using a specially 'home made' ammo because you "wanted to make sure", etc, etc. And he likely would make 'something' out of whatever components you had used to make it sound all the worst to those unlearned who might be on the jury, especially in a Civil suit.

First of all, this is a continuation of the internet scare stories about overzealous prosecutors hammering people for trigger jobs and other modifications. So I’ll ask again, can anyone point to one single example where using reloads adversely affected the outcome of an otherwise justified self defense shooting?

As to the poll, factory for sure. I hunt with reloads. 44 mag is expensive. I’ve never had a bad load. Still not trusting my life to it.

Considering most personal injury and other money-grubbing categories of lawyers rank just above an amoeba I would expect one to play that factory vs. handload trick, as well as any modification that one would have on their firearms.

My .02

Only for those that consider the creepy porn lawyer as a role model..

Bob, I think what most of us are concerned about is to not be the first to be hammered by an overzealous prosecutor even if it hasn't already happened. I'm pretty sure in an earlier thread, I told the story about one day at lunch, and on a totally different matter, my attorney made this exact assertion ..... that even if it had not already happened, it would at some point. And with all the crazy chit going on in the country today, it won't be long before someone gets it right in the keester.

Jus' sayin' !!!!

PS: You did tell the little lady for me that in no way did I think her to be 'unreasonable' in your request, didn't you?(y)(y)

Well, luckily for us factory SD loads have come a long way since the olden days. If it can't be stopped with Federal HST it can't be stopped. ;)

As for other modifications, personally I prefer stock triggers, especially on carry guns, although everyone does a little work or has a little work done on their 1911s, myself included. I think unless your lawyer is trying to make the case that it was an accidental discharge no one is going to be randomly testing trigger pulls and trying to figure out if any work was done. I'm not really sure what other kind of mods have any bearing.

And no worries about the woman Joe. @BET7 is the only one on her radar at the moment. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

😯😦😧😮😲🤕, I just booked a flight to Alaska, hopefully she won't find me there 😬😵 😆😆

I'll definitely agree with the improvement in SD rounds by most manufacturers. There's not only an overall improvement, but a far wider choice today as well. I just can't legitimately find any reason for anyone to take the chance with reloads for personal defense these days ..... for any number of reasons.

Hell, he's probably got 3 or 4 of 'em anyway. ;)
Two other PTR clones, but was thinking of adding a HK SP5K and B&T GHM9 (as linked below), to my short list 😆🤣🤣

See, you can spare it then. :ROFLMAO:

In all seriousness I am a total HK fan boy and the next two major purchases I make are likely to be a P30L and an SP5. Although I am like Dug on "Up" and I get distracted eas *squirrel* ily. It'll probably be by another friggin' shotgun.
