Legal Contingency Plans

Some recent comments have brought to my awareness a gap I'm going to address; specifically I want to have an attorneys number in my pocket before an event or need occurs or even if never needed.

The "prepaid" legal services such as LawShield and others seem not to be a wise choice.

What have others found to be proper vetting process to 'pre retain" high expertise (local, or at least intrastate) legal assistance specializing in 2A/incident/involvement? Always grateful for the experience/knowledge of forum members.

As an example, my neighbor is an attorney who practices mostly worker comp cases. The best help he could give me, should the occasion arise, would be the name of a good criminal defense lawyer who may be experienced in the type of event we are concerned about. To compound the issue some of the best criminal attorneys may not be fans of the 2nd Amendment. Point being, I wouldn't want Hilary for my defense attorney. I believe one should do their homework and seek out legal help that is knowledgeable of your state's self-defense laws, understands the legal environment in which you live, and at least respects your view of the 2nd Amendment rights that govern self-defense. Many law practices will give you a free consult if you are shopping around. I think you'd be best served by going out and kicking some tires because if you do go down that road you don't want a bumpy ride.;)

Yes, good idea. The two posts above are right, get a criminal defense specialist. I've yet to meet a lawyer who would throw a case because they don't like their clients but it's definitely a good idea to make sure they know the self-defense laws in your state and have some experience with them. What state are you in? I have a great referral if you're in Minnesota.

And I have one if you are in east-central Missouri.

I’m curious why Law Shield and the like are a bad idea? I have USCCA and have two attorneys in the area I’ve researched. One happens to be USCCA affiliated but I didn’t find that out until after I chose him.
I can't speak to LawShield but I do know attorneys who get on a bunch of other referral programs. They're generally not top flight. It's often a way for the ones without name recognition to bring in clients. That's not necessarily a bad thing but if you have the option to track down a rockstar I doubt they're going to be on referral sites.

I have US Law Shield coverage and an NRA self defense policy. The 24/7 number at US Law Shield is in my wallet. Fortunately I have never had to use them. Even if you are 100% in the right, an overzealous criminal charge can cost you tens of thousands in legal fees by the time the charges are dismissed. I have an acquaintance who is by reputation the best defense criminal defense attorney in my area, but you are going to give him a $25K retainer up front in a felony case. Check them out before signing up.

Totally get that but USCCA and Second Call Defense for sure aren’t those type of referral sites. You can choose whoever you want to defend you. They just happen to also have attorneys who have signed up for those who don’t choose ahead of time.
My guy (the affiliate) is a locally well known criminal defense attorney and my backup is also. They’re both also staunch 2A advocates.

My understanding is that with LawShield and others there is an annual fee that will get an attorney who handles nothing but firearms cases on the line 24/7........But......additional charges will apply as the case goes forward. The annual "fee" is only a membership that gets you the initial "service". ??

I already have a lawyer on retainer. He used to be the assistant prosecuting attorney of the county I live in. Now he is a pitbull defense attorney. He's a friend of my wife's so he's on permanent retainer.
Nice arrangement but I'm not in your territory.:)

I asked who the PBA uses for officer involved shootings. I also asked the former state's attorney (now a judge) and several other people. Then I set up appointments to discuss potential situations and listened to what they had to say. Finally, I went to the target range with two of them and from that I had a first and second choice. Both of them were given a small retainer in exchange for their personal cell phone numbers. I shoot with both of them several times a year and have taken both hunting with me.

I also have attorneys identified from various parts of the state in case I'm out of town when I need an attorney who I have at least met. Not all of them are shooters, and a couple I don't even like, but they are all very good at what they do.

I use Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network.
