I’d trust my life to some of my surplus pistols long before I’d trust some new offerings.

I don't see any big differences between a surplus pistol and any other used pistol. If the internals look well-maintained, and the gun functions properly, then I'm good to go. I'm not picky about appearance and think a certain amount of dings and scratches add character. Missing parts are a no-go for me, and I am very cautious about any modifications done by a previous owner that affect the operation of the gun.
