When Burglars Sue Armed Citizens & Home Defenders

Agreed. With the article, and with the stupidity that is reality in our nation's legal system.

I am a member of US Law Shield, and strongly recommend it, or any of the other CCW-specific legal firms. I want to say it's less than $200 a year, and they cover up to $1M per incident of legal expenses, no questions asked.

In the event that something happens, though...the trainer in my CCW class generally recommended that we make sure intruders are a) inside the building, and b) are not "injured" in the event. Wink wink. Implication being, if you open fire...finish the job. You still have families/next of kin to deal with (potentially) but at least at that point the only eyewitness is...you. And the cops, who arrive to do forensics and site survey (which is where point a) comes into play).

Do NOT (unlike what Just Joe Biden suggests) simply fire your shotgun blindly through a locked door, at someone who is outside your home and "trying" to gain access. Unless we have a legal precedent that says "well, Biden told me to do it so it's OK, right?" is a legally-acceptable defense. Who knows. The way the legal system supports the Liberal side of things, it COULD be acceptable...but I'm not gonna try it.

It is unbelievable that criminals have sometimes more rights then the victims they pray upon. To help protect your rights is to use video recordings of all encounters. Police use them, stores use them, let’s face video monitoring is EVERYWHERE and there is no reason we as law abiding citizens can’t also do the same thing. I have a GoPro permanently attached to the windshield of my truck that is turned on as soon as I start driving and records for 60 minutes then resets for the next 60 minutes unless I need to save the recording. Let’s face it those 12 jurors love video of who is right and who is truly wrong.

I would strongly question your trainer’s advice to make sure to “finish the job” in the case of a self defense shoot...if your assailant is down, and wounded...does that mean execute them? Because that instantly turns a clean defensive shoot into murder.

I guarantee you, if you asked any of the attorneys at US Law Shield if it was good advice...they’d tell you it was not.

Agreed, make sure he/she is dead before he/she hits the floor. And if still alive make sure he/she is disarmed while you wait for law enforcement.

Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network offers direct bail rather than bail bond companies for states like Illinois that do not allow for bondsmen. CCW Safe has a special program for former law enforcement that are LEOSA carriers.

Anyone looking at all of these plans should choose very carefully and match the coverage to their needs. Some coverage works well in your home state and offers little or no coverage in another state. A couple won't cover you for using anything other than a gun. Some won't help with bail except through a bail bond firm. All have limits on their coverage and some are very low.

I'm also a US Law Shield member and very pleased with my coverage including interstate and bail. The included live seminars and online training are also first class. Of course, I hope I never have to use anything other than the live seminars and online trainings, but you never know these days, so I'm glad I have the coverage.

Had to pull a gun yesterday at the gas station. Man walks up to me pumping gas. See him coming. Stick out my hamd and tell him to stop and dont come any closer. Not interested in whatever he is pushing or asking. Very disheveled man. Dirty, looks dazed and confused. Closes from 25 yards to about 10 feet awhile telling him not interested and back off . He pulls a small pocket knife like 4” long. No bueno. Conceal comes out at low ready all awhile telling him to stop. He diverts to gas pump across from me and freaks out customers. Someone called on him earlier, because LEO shows up like 30 seconds later and then back up also blocks him in with the cruiser. Police tell all of us to leave. I do as the rest of us. All the reason why we carry.

Wow. Glad you kept your cool and glad he walked away.

I have been in similar situations several times, but ( at least so far) I have not had to actually draw/unholster my weapon. I have lifted my shirt and put my hand on my weapon in plain view of an approaching dirtbag which had the same effect as yours.

I was telling myself if he attacked or threatened the other patrons at the pumps around me he was going down. I was in “that ready zone” . Wheni was contemplating my next action of engage or not engage for the other pumps, LEO showed up in force. Thank goodness. Burden was off me, but I was “zoned” to take action.

That's always the point when you really, REALLY need to think about your next action and also the point where you really, REALLY start pumping adrenaline and rushing. For me it is helpful to periodically go over different scenarios in my head, keeping in mind the legal and moral ramifications. Obviously if you or someone else's life is threatened action has to be taken, period. The trick is to get yourself to ignore one of the basic tenets of gun safety, namely " Never draw and point your weapon at something you do not intend to kill/destroy." Depending on the immediate proximity of the dirtbag to the assumed victim though your best course of action could very well be to level your pistol and order Mr. Dirtbag to remain perfectly still. Particularly if Mr. D is armed with something other than a gun. Obviously if he is pointing a gun at someone you have about 1/10th of a second to make the right decision. Situational awareness is KEY and thankfully this is a lesson not lost on you. Good job brother.
