45 minutes later, give or take, I’m filling out a 4473.

Walked into my local guy, nothing struck my fancy…and then someone else walked in, and had a trade-in. Nice blue S&W case. Opens it…it’s a revolver. Stainless. Clean.

He trades it in on a nice Henry large-loop .44. I do the math in my head.

S&W 3” 686+ Deluxe. Not even a turn line.

Ask about it. Guy bought it for deer hunting up north, for bear. Shot it 14 times (1 box, leaving 6 or 7 rounds for carry). Decided he’d rather use his .44 Blackhawk.

His deal done, I ask to look at it. It’s…pristine.

Did I mention I did the math?

Look at my dealer…ask what he wants for it.

He laughs, and says I know what he’s in it for…give him $150 over trade, and we’re good.

So, as you know, there’s a 4473 involved. Guess that was a spoiler alert.

Sweet! You know I love me some 3" .357s.

If I didn't have a .357, I'd like it a lot more. But I'm pretty well .357-ed up at the moment (I think I have 8 or 9 of them, now). To add another one, it would have to do something that one I already own doesn't, and except for shoot a 7th shot, this one won't do anything that my 3" 66 or my 4" King Cobra won't do better.

But congratulations--I can definitely see the appeal.

I quit drinking in 1984, which is the main reason I've been able to afford things like eight or nine .357s, all of them either Smiths or Colts.

Last time I checked, I still held the World Record for Consumption of Schlitz Malt Liquor by a Living White Man.
