We Have to Be More Careful

I hate to see things like this happen. To be woke up at 1:00 a.m. or so out of a deep sleep, instantly be on full alert and ready to go to war against a bad guy (or several bad guys) is bad enough, but to then somehow shoot your wife accidentally and wind up in jail. What a night he had!

I didn’t see a lot of details in the article. I wonder what happened.

I’m curious as if he took any training outside of a lame NRA muzzle forward wait 30 seconds if it misfires yada yada classes.

Classes or training where you learn when not to shoot and not to tear the firearm as the only tool would have probably done this dude some good.

Didn’t watch it but Active Self protection had a video something about a homeowner shot 30 rounds at a pool boy he thought was an intruder. People should probably study up on legal use of force and be responsible and not shoot 30 rounds or say not shoot people they live with would be great!!!

Let’s be real.
Someone in class or society will always be bottom of the class or last.
They have rights and privileges.
Doesn’t mean they are smart enough to exercise those rights or privileges to a degree of sanity.

People in society will prey upon others.
It is our job to teach them otherwise and send them to hell

If life were grand, police, prisons and laws would not exist. Society would be polite and respectful.

Its not.

War has been around for thousands of years and will be for thousands more.

Always win. Teach evil it will not win.

Ever

I have no respect for those who prey upon the weak, for I will prey upon them and show them the gates od hell

There are folks out there I would rather not see owning a gun. They are careless enough to be dangerous, stupid enough to not understand basic gun safety (even with training), and/or no interest in learning to do things the right way. Good grief, the anti-gunners don't need any more incentives to try to take our rights away. We're trying to preserve our rights, trying to get good press out there, battling the haters and it takes very little to do major damage to it all. I'm sorry this guy hurt his wife, thankfully she wasn't killed, but it was a wakeup call to this guy that he shouldn't be a gun owner.

The NRA doesn't have a patent on lame ass classes. Every single state that issues CC permits has them. 75% of all firearms classes are taught by idiots. And exactly zero CC classes qualify as anything resembling actual training. Furthermore the NRA does have some very good instructors who have the knowledge and credentials to get the job done correctly.

Furthermore, you don't have to have any training to not shoot your wife accidentally. It's common F'ing sense. ALL GUN SAFETY RULES ARE COMMON F"ING SENSE.

There's a lot of that around here. And while I certainly agree not everyone should own a gun, it is a contradiction to on one hand try to lay qualifiers on firearm ownership and on the other claim it is natural and constitutionally protected right. I would also argue that words are far more dangerous and kill far more people than firearms, but you don't hear anyone advocating training or qualifiers for 1st amendment rights.

It's a paradox isn't it? I'm a gun supporter/owner and yet I don't want to be around some people who have them. There's a lot going on in this country that I don't agree with either, but it goes on despite a large majority that also opposes it. 2024 looks like an interesting year to put it mildly.

Yeah, I don't want to be around a lot of different people regardless of whether they have guns. Of all the groups of people I don't want to be around, law abiding citizens who happen to be morons are pretty low on that list.

There lies the problem. Common F ing sense!!!!

And I didn’t say anyone should be required to take training. However most (even agency firearms trained folks) don’t realize how much they would be for a quality professional level class from like Rangemaster, or the vetted folks like Hearne, Bolke, Eastridge, Hill, Weems, Qadir etc

As far as my NRA description while there are some fine people that happen to be NRA instructors there are a time more that come across as inept at their craft from those in the professional training realm.

My point was the NRA is so entrenched in state legislatures most dates involve the talent of an “NRA” stamped instructor to teach their class (we can also mention how stated require a class to carry yet forbid anyone from drawing from a holster as a proficiency drill in said class from the same holster they will be carrying)

And the fact the NRA won’t tighten strings and allows anyone to be an “Instructor” has not helped

That said I am presuming a guy like this In the story wouldn’t listen but we all need to try and be better Stewart’s with 2A related topics.

This is a prime example that owning or carrying a firearm for self defense is a LIFESTYLE CHANGE a lot of folks don’t respect and ends up like this guy!

I'm pretty sure NRA instructors, more than one of whom are members here, would disagree that they allow anyone to be an instructor. Sounds to me more like you jumped on the F the NRA bandwagon. Which sure AF isn't gonna help anything.

Respectfully just discussing. And as such I am just relaying MY EXPERIENCE with NRA stuff but before I get into that let me say enjoy the NRA Meeting I am a member and I happen to have a NRA Instructor rating myself. There are some great people that do a great job that are NRA But an open book test and generic marksmanship requirements is what I am basing my rubber stamp comment on

(And if they would get rid of some upper leadership and their waste of money it could get back to being great again but that’s another thread)

I have seen more “NRA” folks brag about “NRA” instructor and then scare off many impressionable folks that were trying to show an interest in firearms. With everything from lack of ability to explain how whatever firearms works, antiquated or just plain cringy how to shoot people advice to gun handling and I won’t even get into the Misogynist personalities that run rampant.

I will also say I have been muzzle swept more by “NRA” folks than almost any other group. And have seen several fail Rangemaster Instructor Class and perform pretty poorly in others when they talked all about their NRA instructor status and awesomeness at the class intro!

The only reason I got an NRA instructor rating was despite all my FLETC and ILEA experience NRA was embedded in so many state legislators most required NRA to do any state classes. While the NRA LE side I have a lot of respect for as it’s like a real you have to meet high standards to pass’s, the difference is the basic classes is majority everyone gets a trophy.

But, but, but NRA = BADDDD  ;)
As for "We have to be more careful". Why? So far, I have managed NOT to shoot my wife. Where does the "we" come in? Maybe just me but I'm sick and tired of being "reminded" of how careful, mindful, extra responsible, cautious, I have to be because some other Jack Wagon wasn't. Then a lot of things twist my tail, maybe I'm just getting old. One sure fire way NOT to have a U.D./N.D. is keep your booger digger off the bang switch. And that don't take a whole lot of training.

at my house, it's just me and the wife...she knows to stay low and down in the bedroom if something goes bump in the night, and NOT to come out running if she hears shots.. i told her to wait for me to call her...in the meantime, she would have already dialed 911.

There are always bad apples in any group, And I feel pretty confident some NRA instructors, as many as the NRA certifies, may fall in that group. The guy in the article made some big mistakes, obviously (based on Monday morning quarterbacking), but I didn’t see the NRA mentioned. Maybe I missed it. :). Let’s not bash each other because the guy goofed up. And personally, I haven’t walked a mile in his shoes. I hope I wouldn’t do something stupid like he did. But, we can learn from his mistake.

Happy New year everybody!
