Alone style …. but with the handgun of your choice?

Hopefully right forum, so here goes:

You’re leaving behind the comforts of civilization and heading into the Bush … let’s say two locations to pick from: a) Appalachian or b) the Everglades

What’s your choice of handgun and why?

For me, I believe I’d take a 480R in a DA revolver to Appalachian and a Glock 22 to the swamps and marine environment like the Everglades.

For me, the 480 provides ample horsepower to deal with anything in the foothills. I also believe a DA to be the better platform for the uncertainty of encounters in the deep woods than a SA. The Glock 22 likewise provides a simple, yet effective platform for what I’m likely going to encounter in the marine environment coupled with ease of maintenance and corrosion resistant.

What say you and why???

No way I’m going in the Everglades.

A 4-6” .357; N-frame, preferably, stainless would be nice, but a hard use finish a must. So, a 628 or 28. A 686 would also be acceptable.

.357 could handle any large problems (bears) easily; it will also take down medium game (deer), or you could swap for a mild .38 wadcutter or SWC and get rabbits or squirrels for the pot without first…er… ”tenderizing” them.;)

THIS! Snakes and alligators mean no me. I'll take bears, coyotes and meth cooks every time.
Well, my first choice in either case wouldn't be a handgun

Though I'll have my Single Six with me. We have been banging about the wood's, waters and fields together too long for me to turn my back on her now.

First off, Everglades hell na. I aint no southern swamp rat and know my limitations, pick me someplace in the woods of the north instead.

S&W 357 magnum, not fussy to model, stainless preferred, 3 to 4 inch barrel. This will do anything I need a firearm to do, from small game to that jealously guarded still, or pot grow i stumble across in back country Appalachia. Carried in a simply rugged pancake with chesty puller chest harness system.

Then a decent knife, Kabar FUK or a smallish Sami Lueko size if i can only have one. That will do everything i need a blade to do from shelter to fire, to food. Yeah on the large size for skinner but will work and be a better chopper and draw knife. A large ferro rod, And tarred decoy cord, lots of tarred decoy cordage...

Grew up on the western edge of the northern Appalachian range. Too many BIG timber rattlers and ticks in the heart of the PA Appalacians to hangout there for my tastes, but we didn't have the "Deliverance" characters that seem to occur in the southern Appalachians, and I left the the Eastern humidity many decades ago so both are a hard pass on both.

The Everglades are a hell-scape with Burmese pythons, fire ants & gators, plus the humidity and weather so that's a hard pass.

Anything .357 that's rust-resistant is needed back East and can handle the above.

I'll stick to Northern Rockies Griz country and better weather. Already equiped as needed for all that.

My .02
