How do you cycle your carry ammo?

For the semi crowd: I try to make it a point to cycle the CARRY ammo in my EDC every 2-4 weeks (chambered round goes to the bottom of the mag), rinse & repeat, until all of the rounds have spent at least 2 weeks in the chamber. Then I shoot them off at the range and load up with fresh EDC ammo. It's not set in stone, and if the rounds look good I'll extend the practice when needed (or shorten it).

I know things are going to be a lot different for revolver users (if you ever cycle your ammo at all) but I wanted to see who does things differently.

careful on how you state questions and replies you might not get what you're asking for 🤣

As far as chambered rounds while Rangemaster suggests getting rid of it after 2 chambering so keep mine a little longer

If I see any obvious bullet setback then yeah then.
That said I don’t rwchamber a whole lot as I have zero kids in my house or that visit .

That said I change out my duty ammo about every 6-8 months. Sooner if I am stuck in a monsoon.

Whem I did real municipal LE and was in and out of hot/humid wet/cold several times a shift I changed out a little earlier

My Wheelguns about once a year!

Everyone else’s mileage may vary!

I dont cycle every single day. Three firearms are always loaded. Glock 17( home defense) cc9 (conceal carry), ar15 rifle. The rifle only comes out at night. Always locked in safe during the day. The Glock is in lock box by night stand the cc9 is within arms reach most of day , goes into nightstand at night.
When I do go to range( usually twice a month sometimes more) I shoot up the home defense hollow points that are loaded in mags. That’s when they get cycled out.

Thanks for bringing this up. I have an M&P Shield 1.0 in a nightstand safe that hardly ever gets touched, so the cycle rules don't apply to that, only guns that I carry and get banged around and bounced around from daily life. Those are the rounds I'm concerned about. Over time they can dent and warp.

Hi,

I don't cycle on a regular basis. Whenever I think about it I will replace the cartridge in the chamber and put the other cartridge somewhere else in the magazine. Every few months, whenever I think about it, I will shoot that magazine at the range, either when practicing or in a class. It's been a long time since I've had a malfunction. Knock on wood. Clean my guns. Buy good ammo. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I get it. But it's got nothing to do with the quality of ammo. Our EDC ammo gets knocked around just from day-to-day stuff. Even walking jostles it in the mag and puts micro-dents in the cases and such. Honestly, you could probably carry the same ammo for a few years without ever touching it and it would work fine, but there's always that chance, ya know?

Last thing we want is for that cartoon "bang!" flag to come out of the barrel when we need it most. This is just part of regular maint.

Mine is loaded and is carried. I shoot at me range periodically. Then I drop the loaded mag, empty the chamber and use a different mag that is range use only. When done, clean the weapon, reload the carry mag, chamber a round and top off mag with a fresh round. A couple times a year I shoot the carry ammo at a range session, switch to a different mag and start over. Mags have all been tested and function fine. Revolver? Take out the good stuff for range sessions. Clean after shooting then reinsert the good stuff. Usually shoot the carry rounds from a wheel gun at least annually.
