How loud a gunshot is depends on the firearm, but it’s usually pretty loud. Send a single round downrange without hearing protection, and permanent damage can result—even complete loss of hearing. You can eliminate the risk by wearing foamies, quality earmuffs, or modern electronic versions with suitable decibel-reduction ratings. Every experienced shooter knows it’s a basic safety requirement when firing. Recent testing conducted by Widener’s indicates it’s even more important than many realize.

When I was young , I shot more rounds than I can begin to count out of a 12 GA shotgun , .22 rifle , Ruger Mini 14 rifle and even my 30-30 rifle .

I guess that is why I have to wear a hearing aid these days. I also have my hearing protection on these days when I go to the range.
 
well yes some are loud
the ones i dont like are when your in the woods checking the hog that just fell prey to your 308
and all the sudden you hear a report, way on other side of the "preserve" and by happenstance a piece of tree a few yards away falls off, and hits the ground...those are the loudest crunch you will every hear

my muzzle brake i put on the 308, does seem to soften the initial BOOOOOM to more of a BOOmmmmm
 
When my boys were young, I took them to the desert to teach them gun safety, how to shoot, etc.

I let them shoot their 22's at some pumpkins. I failed to bring enough ear protection for myself, so I opted to just plug my ears with some .357 brass I found lying around.

Once they were done with the 22's, I pulled out the Browning BAR II Safari in .243 Winchester and shot the pumpkin. It's got the BOSS system on it (adjustable brake).

While it did not BLOW my eardrums out, it was DARN close. The "WAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWA" sound continued for a few minutes, then finally settled down. I felt like a grenade had exploded next to me.

Bad choice for ear protection. Haven't repeated that stupidity again.
 
One of my carry guns is a S&W Shield loaded with 147grn HST standard pressure. I use it for performance, but I thought being subsonic would be an added benefit if shooting without protection in a self defense situation. One day in a rare incident, I was outside in my front yard, two pit bulls ran into my yard, the alpha male started charging me so so when it got about 20’ I drew and shot. My ears were ringing for two days 😳. I was about thirty feet from my house so that may have added to the sound level but I was surprised 😲. I couldn’t imagine a 9mm +p or even a .357 Sig.
I carry heavy for caliber in 9mm/147, .40/180, .45/230.
 
In the Nam, with no hearing devices, I was around 105, 155, 175 and 8 inch cannon. In the field, as a F.O. I was in firefights, ambushes, etc. V.A. Gave me a disability for tinnitus but not hearing loss, although they will, and do, provide me with hearing aids…go figure!
