Range Report: Oh Henry! Sighting In, 3/20/26

BassCliff

Hellcat
Friends and neighbors,

I did not fire a handgun today. My mission was to get both Henry rifles sighted in as well as I could. I brought both the .357 Magnum Steel Side Gate and the .22 Small Game, both with 20" barrels and large loops. I like the large loops. When I grow up I want to be The Rifleman. I procured my favorite lane. Pay no attention to the man in the reflection.

In my backpack were a few tools, small screw drivers, allen wrenches, and my punch set with mallet. But first I fired three shots with the .357 to get a starting point.

OK, not too terrible. Like @Lab4Us, I had taken a WAG and did a little adjustment on the front sight with my non-marring mallet before arriving. Now I'm going to fire three, make adjustments, repeat as necessary. This might not be so easy to see, but I didn't want to post up all the incremental targets. Below you'll see nine hits - three groups of three, the first three in green, smack the front sight with the hammer, the second three in yellow, smack the front sight with the hammer, and the final group with red arrows. That looks pretty close.

I'm going to stick on an "aim small, miss small" reactive bullseye and shoot another group of three to check.

Well, hey! I'd say that's pretty good, for a target I can barely see. Let's shoot a group of ten, a whole mag tube, and see if I can stay consistent. Note that all the shooting so far has been from a "rest". I'm using my backpack to steady the rifle. OK, next target.

AP1GczMw1OHhQzwsHnTFVbtlLW20fNTnAEHv31_ZJSSDcaKzItOR-7AVSXjYfcxHjsNl8nkOIlF3c_YyqjP0CBuQOkGx6KxjnN4B5h5O0y2-Q5IDYHNxX-fcxJ0XwxPTf6PIkJywoX1fGgPjfZG5fmzv2JaU5Q=w1651-h929-s-no

Alright, I guess we can say it's dialed in. Now I can try to have some fun. But first, a glam shot.

AP1GczMnkG61Kr2np7tlRxRvGExIK0p0wNVggpxbjNL0cYRL-3F1wKMOnsG1k-Ms9XJzHH85WbEhMTR2S27bcI4UD4HGP6zp1VCXj019_YQaGnjasitjgAMvj_6m7NyFIkBsVmFr0U5VxfRUwCwHs3VjMOuaeg=w1651-h929-s-no

This is generally my favorite target. I like the big red bulls eye. But at 25 yards I can hardly see it. For this target I shot a string of 10 from my "rest" and another string of 10 freestanding shoulder fire. You can see the spread without the rest, especially the four bad flyers.

AP1GczMNyvZPocLdaG4STu0a-81WoYH7XqX73d5wtCF1LMUrMOKDvfABlaThtx2cKLHGV3jlvZcirVaONMnNCnyydjMdG8ums9LvfMnTR_SRZUuCeHZwUekPgxR9bax-mwLzkBdf5G3iO6OMxKkNv9bTwJYFpA=w1651-h929-s-no

I patched it up and put 10 more hits on it from my backpack rest. I let one get a little to low, having fun, shooting too fast.

AP1GczP5oqCITRzCC9rUMuEsM8IvMOWSnhMpgQj4ckIexGyP_iXFqoYmr4FtHTAywJ8lIUF_-n4iYkfF_FNEha5kAs_QshMwnBwyqm37wpe1On2dQwy0TgJy-JYMWXjYukoXl4AkLr3GdlZucwaOcRuMWCjRYw=w1651-h929-s-no

Here's another string of 10 freestanding. Ewww, four more bad flyers.

AP1GczNYLVnuQiiAYw6WOpMOMBnsXxTaF_Yu7ttgUctj2Pa0W83roAZ_ocpvuO1WHe_Q_Nc4jWTfQMoTtrfBan4Tuj0ucDwkv1aqttKnJ2VV_aMtZlZj-gpZlXegTMxEu_nJZ7jbVY3oLD8kCzRGfDBv3t5z3A=w1651-h929-s-no

I'd brought about a box and a half of .357. For my last eight cartridges I shot them freestanding.

AP1GczNpNVFRRPCw22--egCtRTOgOhwYkBI8FhTsy-w3KwXCequLVAGKdxg3VsHtSH8vZ19EQikRbMDfSiu6ncTgTtYPZi92FPSXCZpA9IflF46wXKkh2Tj7dCwgAHEeBmsp6TPCnmgKImZKO_iaQE34_SuZQQ=w1651-h929-s-no

OK, I was trying to pay attention. At least there were no really bad flyers in that group of eight hits, all in the 9 ring.

Dang, the forum is complaining. I have to split this post. Be right back with the .22 Henry.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Hi! I'm back. Let's continue....

I'm out of ammo for the Big Henry so I'll move on to the .22 Small Game. Here's my group of five at 25 yards.

AP1GczNIOVPmgfvB3Rmxa9vdC_5pGlez3uGJ9vqTPGcFDo5d_mIh9VD0rgq7ArapbN0DJM5G_Z9c0jqv6HaASOClDtnbEuBNe_eAgplX0XfTk5ojkGLBfTQqN2IvUEO5JGwT_p_8VTv0V_BBn5bqEBwRDf2C5A=w1651-h929-s-no

I'm really going to whack on the front sight because the rear peep sight is out of room to make adjustments. I'm hoping to overcompensate with the front sight so that I can adjust the rear sight back to a more centered location. I'll spare you the "shoot a group of five, adjust, repeat". Then I found the rear sight had no adjustment left to lower the POI. So I just had to go to a six o'clock hold. That last group of five don't look too bad.

AP1GczPKZvTf_MS9EifZ4nRZTrH6pywof7fRrrrv_Wf7U_Vzr4Jq0CU_u7uCERsneigJQqEZfRs29HnSLVJm3n_-2TnEjNEYFaqBANfxhArj_nZdPu2HtAfbK9cmPE9R-c_dd_Mjx_yP5RYF8tU2Uw1gbcFJ7A=w1651-h929-s-no

I think I've got the windage adjusted and I've figured out how much six o'clock hold to use. Let's try a full tube of 15 hits. Actually, I think it holds 17, but I forget. We'll shoot strings of 15, if you don't mind.

AP1GczNZRGZqmJlogyZNhyRvjYSQ5FdPvgnlyQXLd9WY2zS2DgiPwfoEaRpHb1IYA5z3IO3R79-H-M3k0snn1iIlB7e2XsTgBC3FiTr6eRcEcBkPGwwBSZyJpcsWKNW4RR5hMXw3tGkrY2vtTYFS9GIynZa6Qg=w1651-h929-s-no

OK, not too terrible. Perhaps my hold is a little too six o'clocky. But we'll shoot a few more tubes and try to get a feel for it. Here's the first group of 15 shooting freestanding. Wow, it really spread out. Oops.

AP1GczNl79YEdvd0ysXD4KiBRwil8mkZBY8jlhX8YUacXucjyzuEFG52kdWkGaM0pGygrgYRx7xD4mgrLfIgcNol8Ev3tG1W0c_lB9enNtrh7EAGD9lv5y601ZAuwz1hpxJcMgeS5iJbAOHtjNwNe0NG89CiTA=w1651-h929-s-no

Let's put up a fresh target and try that again. Maybe I can see the yellow dot in my B-8 center.

AP1GczOVnYMM7B-Xap3hmnd2Td4dJjDP4_ksprJYsxlaUTUxD0bH0WWv1EutiTCzOKawl5TUrxucM8jpnP8Z01k6DALNQcu5VV-O5iliRBl0SQPDSWTOSAybPLxd1YnIUsXI1lmGpufNsjbkPL62rmigZ5VbMQ=w1651-h929-s-no

OK, better, not too terrible. I'll go back to my backpack rest for the next string of 15 and see if I can tighten up that group even more.

AP1GczPvtgsubCzM6Q0iHuZd594lKcHpDQIz7p-EZKysWdVkIZI5Cs1FD9FSTiZRs_mSL8mDeSDH6MmxyirQHnjo2eMeXRwfgJiY75tWPrpbf91CRYCmCt8OMrIyNQQUzr6BgjvAHRE1M0e_ApZDG44obFutfw=w1651-h929-s-no

Yes, a tighter group from the backpack rest. With a line break, they're all in the 10 ring. Is that worth a glam shot?

AP1GczNx-VPCyJUJwotqaJQau3aLupRR_ow8WotPkgra5V6RNqqFt2EBzJ1y2hgEDmCbJRfDdVUsTpEUrFvTOP7q4cRAJDL24Fu2UPqibfrrPYdMPk0y6DvH9dg8YNL1yS5QL-72QYQ7pQDBhFYIOoSQybK04g=w1651-h929-s-no

I'll keep working on it. I know both of these rifles should be able to put all the hits in the X ring. One of these days. Sure. Only if I get new eyes. ;) Now I'll send out my favorite reactive silhouette target and put 15 hits on it from the backpack rest.

AP1GczNtbHXYzAmnu8rIRrllmt81qVgM4JjGIIKO3d_f6RbJ_DVgUGuOjLDebRr86snebXc7SuHiXyWN4Y2feTLt9LUIipPUNw8fclrInKDTeB0cSmhwXGpCzx7JeBjPiO8ylmGvzu3v7DZZKnXZN9duba_rtw=w1651-h929-s-no

Um, again, a little to much six o'clock hold. It's a nice group with only one real bad flyer. I think it's my breathing. I'm going to patch up this target and put 15 more hits on it freestanding. I'll try to be less six o'clock-ish.

AP1GczOfTCLHRq3EnLw55kmIZ8sFBi9eHy--MDDMmfgOlurimE81DN_yxZyrWtj1H-Ni5UcL4qpez9tF7g6Y_GW8aFbB_pEq6KFIFTsQJdO-PsD8GlF7r68nT47isxhtrRAtFbCPWBOq_ZS9aPCfslxXm8HcaA=w1651-h929-s-no

OK, better. There are a few outliers but I think I've figured out the hold for this rifle with this target. I just wish my eyes were better. Now I'm getting hungry and a little tired. I've been here for three and a half hours. I think I've had all the fun I can have today.

Sorry, I didn't have room to post a picture showing my ammo today. The .357 magnum was from Freedom Munitions. That is good stuff at a good price, especially when they offer free shipping. The .22LR was the Aguila Super Extra. It's pretty good stuff but can be finicky in some semi-autos. Have you ever noticed that it smells kind of sweet when you shoot it? Kind of fruity? It's weird. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, time to pack up my kit and go get some Friday fish fry.

These lever rifles are so much fun, especially now that they are sighted in pretty well. I don't know what I'm going to shoot next week. I'd like to shoot these again but I still need practice with my optics pistols. I've got several others that haven't been out of the safe in months and months. I can't remember the last time I shot any .45ACP. Decisions, decisions. Thanks for coming along. You guys are the best. See you next time.

Hi,

I love freedom munitions. I been getting the tubs of 9MM and 10MM. NOW I’m waiting on the .22lr to show up Monday.

Before I forget. Nice report

They've got a nice product at a pretty good price. I buy mostly .357 and .45ACP from them. They're one of my top three vendors. I used to visit their brick-and-mortar "sister" store near LAX (LAXAmmo). During covid, while all the neighborhood sporting good stores had a few boxes of ammo on the shelves, they had cases stacked up around all over the floor. I thought I was in heaven. ;)

Hi,

Good shooting Cliff. Got to love those Henrys!

Ya know, they are even more fun than I thought they would be. I can't wait to get them outdoors and maybe do a little runnin' and gunnin' with them. I'll get a holster for my 686 Plus and a sling for the Henry. I can pretend I'm in a Western and play Cowboys and Indians. (Can I say that?) No offense intended, just reliving my childhood.

Hi,

Looks like another great day at the range for you! I’m just glad my WAGs are tiny screw adjustments or wheel turns and not whacking on the front sight 😂!

I've been enjoying your range adventures too. ;)

I didn't whack it too much with my WAG. :ROFLMAO: I just wanted to get it started. It made for a quicker adjustment while at the range. I'm still thinking I'd like to put a Skinner peep sight on the .357. I'll shoot it a few more times and think about it.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hi,

good shooting @BassCliff

someday, when i get old enough and can earn more money, i too want a Henry, but no larger a caliber than a .38

does your shoot both .38 and .357..???

Thank you sir! Yes, as @Belt Fed mentioned, this one shoots both. I haven't shot any .38 with it yet but the recoil from the .357 Magnum is minimal. I really don't think it would bother your shoulder. It's nothing near a 12ga and just a little more than the .22.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
