Ayoob: How to Discreetly Carry Larger Handguns

I'm 5'6" and 170 lbs. I can carry my Hellcat in a Crossbreed Reckoning IWB holster under a t-shirt using the smaller mag. The butt ends up just ahead of my right arm, totally concealed. I try to combine with a patterned shirt to camouflage it even more. With good Hornady Critical Defense/Critical Duty I'm comfortable knowing any typical threat can be handled with it and me. The folks who contemplate gunfights at 25 yards are probably watching gangbangers go at it on the news. Just my opinion.

My ideal would be an officer frame with a commander slide. Even a full size slide would not be a problem with an IWB but the shorter butt would be a great benefit. Every maker seems to want to do it backwards with the full size frame and the short slide when the slide isn't the hard part to conceal.
I’ve said this over and over in lots of places. It’s never hard to conceal the slide/barrel. The longer the grip, the more tactics it takes to keep it concealed/not print. While I like a gun with a bit of meat on it, I don’t need an 18 round magazine…I can easily carry a spare. I’ll even go one step further and share that, FOR ME, the longer the slide/barrel/holster, within reason - 4/4.25/5 - the easier it is to keep the grip from artificially protruding out when carrying AIWB.

So you don't wanna conceal carry with a 30-rounder in your Glock? LMAO! Yeah, the "bullet holding part" can be too long, one of the reasons I'm really glad I bought the Hellcat shortly after it arrived on the market several years ago. The 12-round mag prints too much under a lightweight shirt, but it provides better purchase on the pistol. OTOH, the shorter 10-rounder hides well, but is just a teeny bit too short to be as comfortable as the 12-rounder. Goes back to compromises, right? And I only have the one short mag. My other 4 are the 12-rounders.

My first holster many years ago was the Bianchi X15 for my aging GI 1911. A bit later when I bought my all steel Commander, I went for the OWB unit. A jacket, vest, or shirt always worked fine.
I am of small stature. I favor hard hitting, heavy .45 loads over capacity.
Spare magazines offer capacity.

I bought a couple X15s yeeeaaaars ago for my S&W Model 29 .44 & Model 19 .357. It was never what I needed or wanted, but they were functional. I no longer have either one... not sure where they ended up. Today, we don't have to carry large wheel guns, so our holster choices are many, as is our choice of pistols. I have a Kydex OWB holster and mag carrier for the 1911. It's functional, but y Safariland drop leg is the one I really like for the .45. A lot of the gear I have is tactical or for hunting. MY EDC options are few, and that's not a bad thing.
