I'll go along with checking the bore and shooting it first just to see if its worth the effort to re-finish it. Its gonna need a good bit of polishing before you even consider a re-finish. That will add to the cost unless you do it yourself. But polishing is where a lot of damage is done...

I don't know if you'd call it famous, but I have a S&W 2nd Model 44 HE that lettered as going to the Police Dept of Joplin, MO in January of 1924. I'll bet its had an interesting life.

The biggest problem with the current S&W revolvers is that QC absolutely sucks. Far too many brand new guns are having to back to the factory for issues that should never have left the factory to begin with. Getting a good new revolver is a coin toss. 🤬

My club has an Action Pistol range that's used mostly for USPSA and IDPA competition. Here you can draw from the holster, use barricades and run and gun or whatever. On weekdays its mostly open to whoever wants to use it. However, you do have to qualify to be allowed to use it. Usually shooting...
