Why I Carry with an Empty Chamber — Should You?

I live in a small retirement community south of Tucson, and I usually carry a Ruger LCP .380 in a pocket holster. Loaded chamber, of course (I'm a Gunsite graduate). Most likely threat would be a rabid coyote or confused javelina. If I'm going into Tucson, my choice is a .45 ACP Ruger SR1911...

Why I Carry with an Empty Chamber — Should You?

The good doc is not crusading for Condition 3, he's merely relating what works for him.

How to Legally Own a Machine Gun

In the late 1950s, Hunter's Lodge, Interarmco's retail outlet in Alexandria, VA, offered casually DEWATed Sten guns for $14.95, and Thompson 1928A1s and StG44s for $79.95. Full-auto anti-aircraft cannons and other wheeled artillery were displayed for sale in the parking lot.

The Life and Legacy of Jeff Cooper

Where did the "5 grand" figure come from? The basic Defensive Pistol course, which everyone takes, is $1,900 and change. Granted, that's not cheap, but what's your life and wellbeing worth?

The Life and Legacy of Jeff Cooper

I have been to Gunsite a number of times, first during a 3-day gun writers' familiarization weekend, and later for the basic 5-day Pistol course, plus several more writers'events. The level of instruction is without peer. I had been shooting since age 13, had competed on the post pistol team...

    The History of Gunsite Academy

I'm old enough to remember competing on the Ft. Belvoir pistol team, one-handed with rack-condition 1911s. For me, Gunsite was a revelation. I was first invited to a 3-day Gunsite media event, sort of a synopsis of the basic Pistol 250 course. It was such a rewarding experience that I signed up...

Was the M1 Garand En-Bloc Clip a Terrible Idea?

I was introduced to the M1 during Basic Training at Fort Dix. NJ, in the summer of 1957. I am left-handed and left-eyed, and I was warned of dire penalties should I injure myself (Government property) while operating said rifle in a lefthanded manner. I can truthfully state that I never...

Is the SA-35 Suited for Modern CCW? An Undercover Cop’s Perspective

I bought my SA-35 in December of 2021, and have taken it to the range on numerous occasions. i've never had a failure in I don't know how many rounds, but I would not use this pistol in its present form as my EDC. Why? Because i am left-handed and I carry in Condition One, cocked and locked with...

Nazis, Noms de Geurre and the Complex History of the Hi-Power

Perhaps JMB felt that there was no real first-round advantage to DA/SA over a single-action pistol in Condition One. There was also the necessity to master both the first-shot DA trigger pull and the subsequent SA pull.

Review: Springfield Armory 9mm Garrison 1911

Nice piece of ad copy by Dr. Dabbs. Almost had me sold (like I need another 1911) until I noticed the absence of a thumb safety on the starboard side. C'mon, Springfield, we southpaws do exist, and I'd be happy even if the ambi safety was an extra-cost factory option.
