I've fired the M-1 and I'd have no problem using it today. I don't mind the 8 round cap, I can put 8 rounds to good use and no magazine makes for a nice clean design. I actually like it but then I like the M-14 as well; another underrated weapon. Detractors, and there are always some - opinions...
