    Ayoob: Why I Don’t Want a Custom 1911

I have to agree with the "plain old pistol" concept. In my 30 yrs. in law enforcement, I saw young kids who had to have every special whiz-bang accessory, trigger, sight, light, laser, red dot etc. Msny had to have the newest and best Glock, Sig etc. The original semi-auto we were authorized...

    How I Homebuilt a Howitzer

A friend of mine somehow came across about a 6 inch piece of barrel cut-off from a military weapon which was large enough in size to fire a "C-sized" flashlight battery. He welded it to a steel plate making it vertical and welded some supporting angle pieces of 1/4 inch steel between the barrel...

    How I Homebuilt a Howitzer

I built this one in high school around 1977. I turned the barrel from a piece of heavy truck axle from the scrap bin. It was bored .75 caliber. I had to heat is cherry red and bury in sand to anneal it. Then rehardened it after turning. The cariage base was a piece of barn oak which was...

When it comes down to it, what is your "go to" EDC?

I carry my Springfield XDS .45 religiously. One 5 round mag in weapon, and a spare 7 round mag. I have a XDS in 9mm as a spare. For many years I carried a S&W Model 60 with 125 grain Remington JHP.

    Is the XD Irrelevant?

I have an XD in .45, and 2 XDS models (one if .45 and one in 9mm) After 40 years of carrying a revolver, the XDS models are my EDC. The XDS is the only pistol I ever took to the range the day I received it and was shooting unbelievable groups at 25 yards.

Lessons Learned: Facing Down a Carjacking

As an old cop who has had to dispatch some four-legged creatures a few times, I never even noticed the hearing thing afterwards. Remember, you're not on a range and seldom will you have to fire a box of ammo at anyone or anything. I wear hearing aids now because of age-deficient hearing. I...

Lessons Learned: Facing Down a Carjacking

I had a similar situation a few years ago. I had retired from the PD after 28 years with a badge and gun to a job in the I.T. world. Old car full of drunk or drugged-out occupants passed me on the right shoulder, then pulled right back in front of me and stopped dead in the road. I stopped...

Is the .45’s Stopping Power a Myth?

My EDC is a Springfield XDS in .45. Right out of the box the accuracy and dependability was fantastic. I also own one in 9mm as well as 4 1911's(one of which is in .22) The accuracy of the XDS at even 25 yards was remarkable. 0

When it comes down to it, what is your "go to" EDC?

I carried a S&W model 60 all polished-out as shiny as nickle as my off-duty piece for many many years. Still carry it on occasion

Guess who now owns a freakin artillery cannon?

I've always wanted to build one that would shoot golf balls. (1 11/16 inch in diameter) Living next to a golf course, the projectiles are free and plentiful.

When it comes down to it, what is your "go to" EDC?

I understand completely the back and hip problems. I wore a duty belt for 28 years. I started in 1979 in the heyday of the S&W Stainless .357 revolvers. We eventually switched to Beretta 92's. I did crime scene work primarily, and I quickly came to the conclusion that the beretta, and 3...
