When I was shooting IPSC, we often shot at 50 yards in matches, before and after the advent of optical sights. We did not however, do it with creepy 5pound triggers, Roy, we did it with 1.5 pound, smooth as silk triggers and routinely hit those 50's. Off to the gunsmith with you.

I like the .45. can take or leave the 9 but, I far prefer the .38 Super. Muck more powerful than the 9, not near as much recoil as the .45 and at my age, that's become a biggie. Plus, I used the .38 Super to attain master class in IPSC, so that's probably why I like it so much. Running a 175...

I've been using red dots since they first appeared in IPSC competition. Now my ageing eyes pretty much demand I use one. They are far, far, far superior to iron sights. But there is a learning curve which probably 80% are not willing to put the time into. So there is that.

I love the 1911 and the STI 2011 pistols. But, I finally broke down and bought an optical sighted plastic clone of ugly because my old eyes. I still keep my highly customized 1911 handy though, because if push comes to shove, I want that one in my hand.

The stiff finger down the frame is holllywood, just like shooting with the handgun turned sideways and held above the head. I'm an USPSA master and have never placed a finger in front of my loaded 1911's. You should keep an eye on your friend. He's a little off.
