The other thing to think about is bullet setback. .40 S&W is notorious for it. My procedure was to mark the round that had been chambered with a Sharpie with a line across the base of the case. Once it had 2 lines (X) it went into the 3rd magazine and wouldn't be chambered again unless fired.
