I removed and reinstalled the trigger mechanism and now it feeds like it should.
Whoever came up with those large flathead screws must have been dropped as a child - more than once. Unless you have arms like Popeye you're not able to get them very tight.
Looking at the bottom of the bolt it appears the bolt is rubbing on the top cartridge in the magazine.
Just ordered Dykem Hi Spot Blue to check it out further.
Will call SA and get their thoughts on it.

OK since my sort of old eyes (76 and wearing tri-focals) can't see very well using the M1A iron sights I put a Springfield Aluminum scope mount and a Vortex Viper 6-24X50 scope.
Now when I have a loaded magazine in the chamber the Op Rod does not want to move hardly at all.

Would I be struck by lightning if I put a bit of white on the front sight of my M1A so I can see it against a black silhouette?

Hi, new M1A owner here.
I can not get the safety to engage on my rifle.
I am reluctant to smack it with a hammer and wonder if removing the trigger mechanism will allow me to move the safety back and forth.
