They waste fuel unnecessarily. I can testify that ups waste around 1/4-1/3 of the fuel they use due to unnecessary routes the drivers are required to follow (not sure about FedEx). If they have a package to deliver next door across the street they'll have to drive 30-40 miles to another place...
