I love reading about these offshoot weapons & equipment, and the now-obscure circumstances and battles they were used in.

For any other Pacific Theater buffs out there, you really need to read “Touched with Fire: the Land War in the South Pacific” by Eric Bergerud. It’s available on Amazon; just search using his name and you’ll get 3 or 4 titles by him (another involves the air war in the Pacific).
