The Marines in the Pacific improvised a similar weapon known as the Stinger. It used a lightweight M1919 scrounged from an out of commission fighter plane, a BAR bipod, and a Garand stock.
I understand that the failure of the T42 was due to someone messing up the chamber dimensions when changing the MG42 from 7.92 Mauser to .30-'06.
