I agree, and was excited initially.

Then the manufacturer came out with a pre-order price of $2.5K, at which I said WTF.

They mustn't got any interest after that, then they recently came out with a new pre-order price of ~$1.7K after dropping a couple minor features.

IMO, I wouldn't pay more than $700 for one.

Wow. Yeah agreed. I'd pay $750, but that's probably about it. Many other offerings in that price range.
