Staff Sgt. Barbara Hile, a six-time women’s service rifle national champion in the 1960s, exhibited her ability to successfully cross over disciplines when she laid claim to the first of her five straight national pistol titles in 1971.
In 1971, Staff Sgt. Barbara Hile claimed the Women's National Pistol Champion title at Camp Perry, Ohio and earned the U.S. Army Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge. This win made national news since Hile became the first female shooter/Soldier to become Triple Distinguished. (She won this same national title in 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975 as well.)
Prior to that, Hile had won the title of Women's National Service Rifle Champion in 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1966 and 1967. She was awarded the Distinguished Rifleman Badge in 1964.
On the international scene, Hile won a Silver Medal and two Gold Medals in Ladies Sport Pistol at the 1970 World Shooting Championships and the 1969 and 1974 U.S. International Shooting Championships, respectively. She was awarded her U.S. International Shooter Badge in 1970.
It was not until 2006 that the next female Soldier, U.S. Army Reserve Lt. Col. Rhonda Bright (who was assigned to the USAMU from 1988-2000), would match Hile's Triple Distinguished status.
