Don’t get me wrong, I do like the Python revolver, I have had several over the years, but my opinion, they are over rated and go out of time way to fast.
My 6" Python might be the most accurate handgun I've ever shot. It will put six 148-grain wadcutters at 25 yards into what looks like a 3-shot cloverleaf group. My 4", OTOH, is no more accurate than any of my several S&W .357s.

The Python frame's trigger reach dimension is too long for me to shoot DA comfortably. (It's longer than a Smith N frame.) As you say, the lockwork seems to be more fragile/finicky than other revolvers. (This might be better in the new Pythons.) For DA shooting, I'd rather shoot my King Cobra.

If you want to do a lot of good .38/.357 shooting, your money is spent with more value on a Smith L or N, or a Ruger GP100.

You'll see more of the older models coming to market. The old sky high resale value is crashing do to more modern models coming to market. The more models Colt brings back into the market I feel the more the older models will loose value.
They're no longer unobtainable
