Brewster F2A Buffalo: WWII’s Forgotten Fighter

The way I understood it, it was more of an "Oh crap. We have anything that will fly?" in the early stages of the war.

That's not to disparage the brave souls who climbed into the cockpit to fight aircraft that had them overmatched. The fact that they likely understood the odds and went out to fight speaks volumes of their character.

The courage and grit of the aviators in the pacific theater is astounding. They fought far too long with inferior aircraft and yet managed to not only hold their own but turn the tide of the war at Midway.

I know this all sounds a bit like hyperbole, but my respect and admiration for these pilots only grows whenever I read accounts of the war in the Pacific. That holds true for all those who fought there, regardless of service affiliation. It must have been difficult to fight a war knowing that you were somewhat an afterthought compared to the European theater.
