great write up. I read an account of a SBD Dauntless out flying a zero. The Dauntless pilot managed to keep his plane in the air by using skidding turns to keep his guns on a Zero in multiple head-on passes, until the Zero ran out of ammunition and headed home. The plane is not always the deciding factor, but the skill of the pilot can play a deciding roll in the outcome.
