7.62 NATO vs .308 Winchester, What’s the Difference

So it's like the .223/5.56 thing. Best practice is to not shoot the .308 in a 7.62 rifle like best practice is not to shoot a 5.56 in a .223 rifle. RIght?

Dimensionally there's no issue, but there can be a pressure difference between "some" commercial .308 and Mil-spec 7.62x51 in "some rifles".

#1 - .308 ammo loaded like mil-spec FMJ ammo is OK, but some hunting/long-range type commercial .308 is loaded to higher pressures than mil-spec 7.62.

#2 - Higher pressure .308 can bend the op rods of M1A and M1 Garands, but in other 7.62 semi's like AR-10's it's OK, and those semi's like FALs with adjustable gas blocks you can tune to handle higher pressure .308.

That's how I understand it.

Yes Talyn agree 100% The operating rod higher pressure bending I've actually seen in an old M1 Garand from modern higher pressure rounds.

I wouldn't shoot any 5.56 in any .223 rifle. I'd have no problem shooting .223 in a 5.56.

I've shot both 7.62 and .308 in my HK91 with never a problem. The fluted chamber wrecks brass any way. ;)

I put an adjustable gas plug on a "hunting" Garand and I dialed it in with plain jane Remington Core-Lock 150 gr with no problems.
