Interesting that you should used the word "fates". In the official records of submarine losses, more than a few are recorded as "fate unknown". This is different than having, say, a rifle company annihilated down to the last man. It's always known where a unit was engaged and usually with whom...they don't just go "missing". Subs only communicated periodically and while your patrol box might be a matter of record, whether you got to it or not could be another matter.
Imagine, whole vessels and crews motor out of port for a destination thousands of miles away and never heard from again. Japanese records did not account for quite a few, diving accidents, sub nets, etc.
