I could not resist, considering your avatar :)

This might be the most intriguing question asked on the forum so far. I think I am an individual ant in the colony

Aptly put! We like to think of ourselves as individuals, but in reality we are all ants in a colony, bees in a hive.

Yes we are.

However, as individuals we have freedom of choice vs. as a drone in a collective were we just do what the higher-ups say what's best for us, tell us who to vote for (if there's an actual voting system) and don't question it.

In a individualistic society we have the choice to change jobs, locations and our lives, whereas in collective socialistic societies we do as they say or we face the consequences.

Yes. In the ST shows with the Borg (NG and Voyager) there's a message there.

Case in point in Voyager, Capt. Janeway is always encouraging Seven of Nine to be an individual vs. the temptations of going back to the collective where life is being a drone.

Thanks for the add-on.

Individual with guidelines.

I understand that I am me, and that I can (and do) make my own choices.

I also understand that I am part of something larger than me - nation, community, various interest groups (here, my motorcycle riding groups, my live audio 'families' and bands, etc), and therefore I need to tailor my choices to fit those groups. STILL a free choice on my part - I can still choose to be part of the group, or choose to tell the group to pound sand - and still an important distinction.

I can choose to be a full individual (hermit), or I can choose to be an individual part of a larger group (like our great nation), or I can choose to be a Demo...er, drone, and do exactly what I'm told because they said so.

So, I choose to be an individual, while retaining my association with groups that are important to me and who enrich my life and happiness. I understand such groups have rules, which I choose to obey, and understand that if I choose not to obey there may be consequences...but that's my choice and I'm OK with that.

Absolutely!
