Ayoob: Dangerous 1911 Mistakes I’ve Seen

One wear item in 1911’s that gets overlooked is the firing pin stop. The small rectangle ish piece around the firing pin that holds it in place. It takes repeated impacts as every time uiu pull the trigger dropping the hammer. So along with a few extra recoil springs if pick up a coupe of those to have on hand.

Just a suggestion through my experience.

Good luck on the auction
Thanks! I think it will sell under $600.

Lots of great stuff in Ayoob’s write up and great comments. If you own a firearm and want to dry fire it. Go for it. Its your property. I am currently bidding on a 1911 A1 9mm stainless steel on a local auction. If I win the auction, I hope it’s been well cared for so I dont have to replace parts.
kinda counter intuitive, what you say...

first you say..." If you own a firearm and want to dry fire it. Go for it."

then you say....(regarding the auction you are bidding on)...."If I win the auction, I hope it’s been well cared for so I don't have to replace parts"...(i am paraphrasing)

so....as you say "go for it and dry fire".....but then, i hope you didn't break any parts" (again. i paraphrased)

can't have it both ways.....

Keep those 1911 articles by Mas coming! Most of us 1911's folk are older BUT we need to pass this knowledge on to younger shooters. PLUS - at 66 and a shooter for 50 years, I still garnered wisdom from this recent article! thanks again to Mas for sharing his knowledge.

The first part was meant as sarcastic but also a bit of truth. Its a piece of equipment and people are allowed to be stupid.
The 2nd part… I just hope I don’t buy an auction piece that has been abused. Hope that clarifies.

So, the proper way for a firearm to be, say 15 "+1" is to load a round from a full magazine, then remove the magazine, top it off, and reinsert?
If you are taking 1911 yes as the external extractor can be damaged/worn quickly without feeding a round from a mag.

But somewhere somebody will claim they have never had an issue. Even though notable 1911 smiths like Bill Wilson advise against it!
