Ayoob: How to Discreetly Carry Larger Handguns

Thankfully I live and travel to more sedate places. The last knowledge I had my local PD does not train to that standard except for a few select officers. Requals at the range stop at 15 yards.
Ive been retired for a few years, so I cant speak for todays standards; but this was my last qualification target. The two low hit were when we were required to do two in the body and one in the head. This was I think 15 yards.

No I wasnt a SEAL or work for the State Department as some here want to tease about. I had some cool assignments as an MP. I did jumped out of a few perfectly good airplanes and I was on the SRT Team for the PD but that wasnt SWAT.

Thank You for your service. Obviously your job required a level of expertise which required hours of practice so take the head shot. My point has been, many people on this forum work regular jobs, long hours, manage active family life and pay for their ammo. Many are lucky to shoot 300rnds a month and are pleased to drill a torso at 7yrd and get half of their 10 head shots on target. Don't infer that the inability to do head shots from 20/25yrds is somehow inferior. Thankfully they are learning to protect their loved ones from the most likely distance.

Hello all, here is today's article posted on TheArmoryLife.com. It is titled “Ayoob: How to Discreetly Carry Larger Handguns” and can be found at https://www.thearmorylife.com/how-to-conceal-carry-full-size-pistols-massad-ayoob/.

I pocket carry in Tactical shorts all 3 of these. Its just how I personally like to do it. All 3 358 magnums, I also am getting a 69 combat magnum and I will do the same. Ive been edc carrying like this so long im not changing at 65 years old. Everyone has their way. This is mine.

Absolutely not but longer distance and headshots should be aspired

Yes this is good but I think its as much a mistake to believe a close range gunfight is the most likely as it is to study computer code on punch cards. Its planning for combat with Daniel Boone as your instructor.

Sure cops still train for close combat BECAUSE they spend a lot of time face to face with people who they dont know whether they are good guys or bad guys. AND sure you should train for that but NOT ONLY THAT. You dont have to spend that much face to face time with someone you dont know

Im not sure why that concept is so hard. When you go to the gym, you have arm days and leg days...the same for self defense; train for close and longer shots.

My point is that not all gun fights will be a 3 feet or 3 yards AND that headshots end fights quicker than anything else. We live in a time of war. A war from within and a war from without. How many that dont like us freely crossed the border? And how many were bread in our cities and universities?

OK. I do know there are more peeps leaving the gym with big arms and skinny legs than ripped like a young Schwarzenegger just sayin' ;). Guessing being physically fit was part of your job also.

Brother the gym was an analogy...to try to get you to understand that you should Train for both

BTW I have no issue with the aspiration but make the most with the time you have which IMO is making sure to not lose the strength you have

Highly skilled people go for the head shot, most people nah

From extensive first hand observation , moderate to medium stress , will result in " pattern size " in same C.O.F. to expand average of 50% . It's not much extrapolation to expect 100 % expansion ( doubling ) under For Real Stress .

So my variant of training mantra would be to the effect of :

' Train Small , so that under For Real Stress , you will only deteriorate to " medium " . '

I.e. training to hit " head Size " area , so that you will be highly likely to actually hit " center of mass Size " area sudden under stress .

Rephrased - Don't Train & Practice for what you expect to be " typical " , Train & Practice for 50% to 100% more accuracy challenging . Thru either , or combination of smaller target size , or longer distance .

Example - 7 Yards is a distance that might as well be carved on stone tablet . So whatever practice , training , or casual shooting you now do at 7yds , move back to 10yds .

Further observations - 10 yards , most people will still have recognozable groups . But differences ( good or bad ) in small technique changes , will be more recognizable at 10 yds .

Ok , potentially grant that point , but counter with :

If you can train & practice to make reasonably quick , "head size" hits one handed at 10 yds , it will seem very easy at spitting distance .

[ On personal note - After hand injury & tendon surgery to left hand , l now have 50% mismatch in grip strength . Which really cut into the gains with two hand shooting .

So , l'm leaning into one hand shooting , at farther than cliche distances . ]

Hell yeah this is what I'm talkin bout
I failed to mention that I can also easily carry a spare Hellcat 12-round mag in my left pocket. No mag carrier needed. That gives me 22-23 rounds. Should I be concerned that I might need more? I hope not! LOL! So easy to carry, quality ammo, a spare mag, easy to conceal... that's why I love my Hellcat. If you're 6'5" you will probably want to consider a larger pistol! ;-)
