Ayoob: The Allure of War Trophies

A nice deviation from the normal 1911 article. I enjoyed reading it! My grandpa was given a sniper’s G43 rifle by his uncle, I believe. Unfortunately, they sporterized it and it more or less exploded on a deer hunt. I was considering restoring it, but discovered that the rear of the receiver was likely cracked (poor metallurgy, they were last ditch and it seemed like more than just a hot round caused the bolt to hit too hard and lose the safety assembly)

I remember hearing the stories in the early to late 79’s from vets. Good times.

Also remember an Elmer Keith article in the latter days of the Vietnam war where he suggested sending a Ruger Blackhawk in 45 acp as ammonia readily ab mail be being it was the service round and no moonclips or Spexial tools needed to extract

A mentor of mine was 3rd Marines in Vietnam and brought back an SKS and NVA uniform off a troop he shot.

Never found anything I could bring back from the Nam. But, I was involved in a shooting in S. L.A. decades later and tried to get the courts to let me have it. No go there. Wasn’t much, a Bryco 9mm that had been stolen in the L.A. riots, one grip was melted and it only got 4 rounds off before it jammed but he did try to kill me before I put a round in his upper chest.
