79 years ago today started the battle of USP Alcatraz May 2-4 1946. 2 BOP staff were killed (Officer Miller and Stites shown below) over a dozen others shot execution style before WW2 US Marines took it back. A lot is said about how violent criminals have become but if you look at the caliber of criminals in the early part of the 1900’s they were more violent. The bulk of BOP staff killed happened at places like USP Leavenworth and, Atlanta, Alcatraz and others in the early to mid 1900’s.

I went to Alcatraz tour when I was a kid. The waters were choppy going out to the Island. I’m glad we went before lunch.
That place is quite intimidating. So much history.
