you people that have (or had) dogs or cats, are lucky.
my daughters when they were young, would come home and say, "look what followed me home", and it would always be a cat.
which the kids would promptly adopt.
in later years, i developed allergies, and as such, it can be so bad, that i couldn't even take the kids, (or in even later years, the grand kids) to the zoo.
my wife and our kids, have to take the grand kids to the park, or the zoo...i have to stay away.
i always wanted a dog, but it will most likely never happen, in my time left on this earth.
