Beyond .45 ACP: Exploring 9mm and Other Calibers for the 1911

i dont know
i have used a few 9mm 1911s and felt they were less than optimal and finicky
might have just been the brand, but they always felt like something was missing

.40 is a bit better, but
1911 in .45 is a hard turkey to beat in feel, effectiveness and performance IMO

I guess by now y'all know I'm a 1911 guy from way back. I have a bunch of .45s, 5 in 38 Super and 2 in .22LR. Love 'em all. 😁
When it first came out, I tried the .40 S&W. Just never could warm up to it. :(
I've had some interest in a 10mm, but I'm gettin' old and recoil sensitive. I sure don't need another caliber to deal with.
As for the 9mm, JMHO but a 9mm 1911 is pure blasphemy. That cartridge just don't belong in a 1911. 🤬
I did try one a few years ago and was completely underwhelmed. I changed it to a 38 Super and never looked back. ;)
I think there are far better guns for the 9mm. If you want a 9mm single action pistol, get a Hi-Power.

I have a few 1911s, they are all 45ACP except for the Ronin. The Ronin is a 9mm and shoots just as nicely as its 45 ACP fellows. It's a little bit snappier as it's a smaller gun, but I am used to it. It is the only one I would carry as the full sized 1911s are a bit big for me to conceal. Hey, I'm all about the blasphemy.. ;)

I learned to shoot pistol on a 1911 in the early 70s and owned several for many years and right now after getting rid of all things 4, on Dr's , who happens to be a shooting partner, recommendations because of arthritis, the only one i have is a .380 that I carry a lot in summer.

Omg I know, blasphemy, but I figured out long ago not to be quite so uptight. I think JMB would get a huge kick out of the fact it is still used effectively and in so many calibers snd even design permutations such as 2011s etc. The only reason for .45 Acp in the first place was it was part of the army military demands. 9mm is fine, and effective, and they have worked out the wrinkles and they are very reliable. In fact every bit as reliable as.45 acp, now they have really decent magazines which function flawlessly.

So yeah, in the next year I figure on getting a 9mm 1911, been something I have been hankering on getting. Why not, I did not give up on handgun hunting when I sold my redhawk, I went to .357 mag. I did not give up on carrying a revolver defensively in winter when I sold my Bulldog, I went down in caliber to a .357 3 inch model 60, and I figure it might as well enjoy my favorite pistol design, no matter who it makes cringe.

The Browning 1911-380 Black Label Compact still catches my eye. I’m just now sure if i want to add another caliber to the mix.
It's one of my favorite summer carries.

I do realize that 9mm 1911s are popular for a variety of reasons. Mainly the cost of ammo and the fact that some people are just too wimpy to handle a real cartridge. 😆 I don't hate you for it. Hell, I'm gettin' old and kinda wimpy myself.
As age creeps up on me, I'm starting to appreciate the 38 Super more and more. Its a better cartridge than the 9mm with about equal recoil. Great shooter, accurate, plus you get a couple more rounds. Ok, so its more expensive. Learn to reload. ;)

Yeah I figured you were getting older. You kinda remind me of those old dudes that hung around the gas station when I was a kid. Didn't like those new fangled 10 speed bikes and color TV was bad for your eyes and every brand of car other than the one they drove was crap.

Lol...
