Cat Scratch Fever - AKA Hellcat Range Day 12 May 25

Lab4Us

Custom
Been a couple of months since Hellcat hit the range, so figured today was as good as any. Last time for range (March 2025), I had removed the aftermarket comp kit (3.8” barrel/SA self-indexing comp). Figured this time I’d stick it back on.

My intent with this first target was to burn up some FMJ at 3, 7, and 15 yards and marked target thusly. Then I remember my optic was a tad off last time so decided to zero optic instead. Moved target to 7 yds (where I zero all my optics) and proceeded to shoot at the center circle (#3) to zero optic. First 11 rounds were left and high (was burning up 11 rounds of Fed Punch 124g JHP I was using for carry), so winged some MOA clicks to move right and down (wing = no math involved, just guess clicks). Few more rounds (this time Winchester 147g SuperX Winclean 124g FMJ) and was happy with where I was hitting. Moved back to 3 yards, 5 rounds ea in 1 and 2, moved to 7 yds, 5 rounds each in 4 and 5. Moved to 15 yds, rest of box of 147g Winchester shot at 3…and seemed to all hit high. This was really all just getting used to rezeroed optic and compensator again.

Following this warm up, decided to shoot my favorite drill. 50 rounds. 2h standing.

5 rounds each, left and right shoulder at 3 yards, slow fire. Leaned shoulder against wall of side I was shooting at.
10 rounds center at 5 yards, soon as back on target.
10 rounds center at 7 yards, soon as back on target.
5 rounds center at 15 yards, slow fire. I usually do this at 10 yds, but with 3.8” barrel, figured I’d try at 15 yds. Leaning shoulder on left wall.
5 strings of 2 to center, 1 to head at 3 yds.

For the left and right shoulder shots, didn’t really have a “target” until I made first hole, then used that for aim.

As I needed to hold back 12 rounds of 124g HST +P for carry (11 + 1), I used 12 rounds of Federated Ordnance 124g FMJ NATO (1250 FPS) first, then finished drill with 124g +P Fed HST. Was pretty happy with this drill, to say the least. Best I’ve done at 15 yds in a while.

Since I had 38 rounds of the Federated Ordnance NATO 124g left, figured I try some mag dumps. Loaded up 2 x 13 magazines and 1 X 12 magazine.

Moved drill target to 5 yds and fired 13 rounds fast as I could, center.

Moved same target to 7 yds and fired 13 rounds fast as I could, center.

Moved same target to 15 yds and fired 12 rounds fast as I could, only difference was leaning shoulder on left wall. High hits as expected, still maintained the 9 ring!

All in all a great day and what I felt was ammunition well spent! The little cannon is all cleaned up and riding IWB as I type.

And since you’ve indulged me this far, here’s a bonus!

I did notice a new sign on front counter today. ARs and AR pistols must have an optic or iron sights to use range…though I was on the main pistol/shotgun side (sub 2000 FPS). Lane I was on is “no shotguns on this lane” lane.

This is also the side they do the firing portion of the Texas LTC course they teach. I’m sure that has something to do with it.

TBH, kind of scares me that there’s that many people running around my city who hit ceiling/walls/floors that often…and that’s only the ones who “try” to practice!

Did you get it from the kitty next door?
