The Battle of Kolombangara was fought in the early morning hours of 13 July 1943 north of Kolombangara island, one of the Solomon Islands. The first part of the battle is described in “Loosening the Apron Strings” in Naval History’s April 2026 issue.
When Allied and Japanese forces clashed off the island of Kolombangara, two clogged pipes gave the Japanese a crucial advantage.
The USS Gwin was the third victim of the Japanese torpedo salvo, and the only one to be lost during the battle.
