Here is an article for the history buffs and the 1911 aficionados.....CMP 1911.

 
A friend of mine inherited a M1911 and several M1 carbines. He sold all of them, except for one M1. He regrets not keeping the 1911, though.
 
I'm sure these are perfect for some shooters, but it seems to me like you could get some really good modern 1911's for the $850-$1050 price of the CMP guns without all of the extra paperwork hurdles. Unless I were a hardcore military collector, I'd have a hard time picking one of these over a new Springfield Range Officer. I do like they that they are finally being offered for sale to the public. I wonder how our government determined that something that had already been purchased by the taxpayers required an additional $1k before it could be transferred to an individual.
