crazy prices on used guns

In the early 1970's I bought a Remington 788 in .243 with a 4 power universal scope and 2 clips for $95.00 brand new in the box@ a local gun shop.Still have it, still shoot it with the same scope. I just can't believe the prices now a days. And i aint gonna get rid of it. Me and my sister have 3 pre 64 model 70 winchesters that our mom n dad left us. It's fun to look up older guns and their history.

With inflation, many prices are on parity with prices long ago, but the trend is that used guns (like Milsurps) got more expensive as new guns got cheaper. The Ruger American would be $50 in 1968, but the Winchester Model 70 would be at lowest $600 new, if my research is correct.
What did you use as the internal rate of return to justify your present value determination over the past 60 years? :ROFLMAO:

Yeah, and how many of us would have bought cases of SKS rifles back in the day if we could have predicted the appreciation. Or AKs? Or even 7.62 x 39 ammo?

Have a friend who bemoans that bricks of . 22LR don't cost what they did when he was a kid. For some reason gasoline, groceries don't get him nearly as upset. In inflation adjusted prices I will bet there's not a significant difference.

There's a lot of good 9mm pistols for under $300. That's Saturday night special pricing from the 70s.

Yep the day's old had lots of gold that was cheap and me and my Harley loved 95 cents a gallon for high test and a a brick of 22 LR under $4, ah yes the old days.

Gasoline this week in S Oklahoma was $2.23 a gallon for reg unleaded.
40 miles S in Texas was .70 cents more and CA week ago on my travels was $5.29 in N LA

Oklahoma prices on gas were a steal.

Here's proof that surplus guns were first very affordable.

The dollar doesn’t go as far as it did in the past. As one of my other comments I made on another post on how I’m always on GB looking for a deal. Yes I love auctions and when I’m in a zone with a good friend, people stand back and watch.

But back to reality. The dollar isn’t what used to be of the past. Inflation doesn’t help and the dollar been off the gold reserve doesn’t make it any better. I rather go back to 1990’s when I was making 4.25 an hour and had a life. Now I’m over 30 an hour and it feels like I’m trying to make stuff stretch.
