Though firearm technology continues to advance, it will always run up against the realities of physics. And as long as gravity exists, it will continue to pull bullets to the ground at a constant rate. The horizontal distance to the target is the most precise way to adjust for that drop, so learning how to range targets is a critical skill for shooters to master.

Brings back memories of training in range estimation. In spite of LRFs and coincidence range finders we did training in the techniques he mentioned. The reason we use MILs is because and angle of one mil subtends an arc of one meter at 1000 meters. As he mentioned knowing the size of an object one can calculate the range using the WORM formula. We also trained estimating range by visual means. Your eyeballs are basically the ends of a coincidence rangefinder although a very small one. With a lot of practice one can get pretty good at visual rangefinding. A very perishable skill though.
