You may get it it back…now the returned condition may be less than desirable. Lots of folks don’t take very good care of things not theirs (and even things that ARE theirs). So in the years it takes it to get returned, it will likely be dropped multiple times, banged around, someone will want to take it apart and not know how to put it together, etc.

It always fascinates me on Cops or On Patrol Live how many actual cops find guns in cars and have to get help to make the weapon safe (though I do give them credit for actually asking for help instead of just pushing and pulling on things). Never thought I’d see an LEO not know release magazine, slide to rear to expel round, check chamber, lock to rear.

As others say though, if it saved you and yours, does the loss of a piece of property matter?
i "wonder if", its not only help the LEO is asking for, but perhaps a witness to ensure the gun was made safe from any ammo still in the chamber..??

I’ll state it again.
If you use a firearm in self defense of your life, the firearm going away is the least of your concern.
Carry what you can reliably and consistently defend yourself with regardless of how expensive it is.
This. Chances you will ever need to use it are extremely low. But if you do need it, you need it very badly. So my advice is, carry a pistol that is dead nuts reliable, and that you train with and can hit with. I have no qualms about carrying a $1800 pistol that I train with regularly and have confidence in. If you are in the right you will probably get the gun back. If you are in the wrong, getting the gun back is the least of your worries.

Florida law requires that unless it is required as evidence or forfeiture, the gun must be returned within 30 days with proof of ownership. Likewise if charges are dropped or you are acquitted, the gun must be returned
