I will leave it to you to find what the meaning of Bear is on the internet. I will suffice to say I found out the hard way in my first foray onto AOL by thinking an AOL chat room named hunting bears was about actually hunting black bears, grizzly etc etc. I got so swamped with IMs and did not know how to delete them I ended up pulling the power plug. I was too flustered to remember where the off button was.

I stayed away from chat rooms after that.

Very big difference between a moderated message board and a chat room. Especially the AOL chatrooms which started it all. Back then there were no moderators, no word filters, it was the wild west of typed interpersonal communications on an instantaneous basis, every one there was live and online at that second. The private messages that could be sent popped up on your screen opened and just layered on top of each other until closed.

It was, an eye opening experience to say the least lol.
