So this post is a good natured story about folks in the firearms arena. Our fellow sport fishermen have been known, on rare occasion, to greatly embellish their catches, often with expansive claims about the fish size, weight etc. Firearms enthusiasts have no lack in this area as well.
Here is a story that happened long ago in a galaxy far far away.
Myself and little bro were in a small town's rather large sporting goods store, near the gun counter. We happened upon a gent opining about the lever action .41 magnum in his hands that the clerk had provided. As I recall the discussion from him was "...this is so powerful, why the .41 magnum is one of the world's most powerful rifles".
Full disclosure on my part - (having used .458 win mag, many of the H&H and Rigby large caliber rifles I was entertained).
Naturally curious, and a much younger man back then, I went closer to hear his wisdom and uncanny grasp of firearms lore, knowledge and legend. He left no doubt that the rifle in his hands was clearly akin to a castle defending Punt gun in power and prestige. He caressed the rifle, carefully running his fingers over the various parts as one would if they held a multi centuries old arquebus, owned by some royalty long ago.
At some point I caught the clerk's eye and I felt we wordlessly exchanged a lifetime of information and consensus. My brother then gave me "that" look and I went to the other end of the counter whereupon the proprietor, who was carefully listening to the other customer's elucidation and expertise with awe. He then smiled and assisted us with our purchases, which that day happened to be some .44 magnum rounds. We left without interrupting the other gent who was still going on about his treasured .41 magnum rifle. Ah, the age of innocence.
I encourage those who have a tale to tell of their experience with such persons to share!
