Found OLD Mossberg scope and mount

Bear007

Custom
About 37 years ago my grandmother asked me and my wife to come help her empty her attic getting ready to move in with my mom and dad. Among all the stuff I emptied, laying between the rafters I found a 1938 Remington Targetmaster 22LR (single shot bolt action), a 1940 H&R 20 GA single shot, a Steven's 12 GA single shot (unknown date) and this old Mossberg 4 Power scope with a Mossberg NO. 9 mount. She gave them to me. I forgot all about the scope/mount until just a few minutes ago when i found it again. I've shot the 3 guns over the years and clean them in my regular rotation but had put the scope in the bottom of my OLD USED gun cabinet that is now getting ready for the trash.

I see some old M4C and M4D scopes onine looking real quick but this scope must be a little older than they are, no part numbers.

I just thought it was interesting how the mounted and adjusted this old scope.

Side note - since I grew up in a house with 10 kids in the D.C. suburbs our parents didn't have any guns. These 3 guns started me on my gun journey 37 years ago though most of it was with rifles and shotguns. I never had any handguns until 10 years ago.

I seem to recall that externally adjustable scopes were still popular with bench rest shooters until the 1960-70s

There was a similar scope / mount on Ebay about 6 weeks ago-

Another similar scope and some info at Rimfire Central-

I didn't think it was worth much. Maybe one day this winter I'll clean it up real nice and make it a decoration. 🤣

If the glass is clear put it to use. May be interesting. I have an early 60’s Weaver B4 on a Winchester 69A that is better than a cheap Simmons scope i have on some of my other 22’s.
The crosshairs look good but there is some dirt inside. The mount needs some work too, some of the screws and adjustments probably have been turned in 50+ years. We'll see how things go ...
