Story I heard in the early 60s was that the old salts thought the Garand was a flash in the pan. Too complex and wasteful of ammo. That changed once enough got into Marine hands.

The Garand was not a welcome addition to the TO&E of the Marine Corps leading up to the formal beginning of our WWII.
Pre-war evaluation of it was anything but open minded, and the Corps was not open minded in the least, until Guadalcanal.
God rest thier souls, they were the men that proved the validity of the self loading rifle as the primary infantry rifle.
