From the History and Rhymes of the Lost Battalion
by
"Buck Private" McCollum

The Lost Battalion is the name given to the nine companies of the United States 77th Division, roughly 554 men, isolated by German forces during World War I after an American attack in the Argonne Forest in October 1918. Roughly 197 were killed in action and approximately 150 missing or taken prisoner before the 194 remaining men were rescued. They were led by Major Charles White Whittlesey. A salute to all that have served.

It is hard for me to accept that I retired from the reserve almost 12 years ago afyer 31 years service.. I joined the USAF in 1969 and did over 16 years active, including 6 years active after 9/11. The service took me around the world to many places. I am so grateful for having known so many magnificent men and women along tthe way who committed themselves to service, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice. Young men and women who stepped forward, took the oath, and devoted their lives to whatever duty came next. Both my sons, my youngest daughter, sons in law, sister in law, brothers in law, and many friends took the path of service. It is patriots like them and many others like them who secure our great nation from aggression. God bless our veterans.
