Is there Tax on Shipping?

I didn't think there was. I'm just curious because most of my orders from wherever generally have free shipping. But I just ordered from Grab-A-Gun and noticed it was about $1 higher than I calculated in my head. But it all adds up if they taxed the total = product + shipping.

Anyway, $1 isn't gonna cancel my order. Like I said, just curious ???

There are all kinds of taxes applied to the price of shipping (e.g. excise, income , licensures, etc..,) but I think what you’re asking is if State Sales/Transaction Taxes are applied, the answer is “it depends the State laws of origin and destination”. Some states apply transaction taxes to shipping, some states apply them to handling some to both.

Normally everything would be rolled up into a single “taxes” line on an e-commerce transaction but it doesn’t have to be.

Generally a sales tax is based only at the rate if that particular State. If your State sale state is 7%, your County and City may add 1-2% more when shopping local merchants.

I’ve always wonder how a small business can charge a sales tax and then not report it to my local taxing body. Scrupulous entities exist but the major outlets have better accounting practices.

These sales tax collections are automated especially more so these days . LGS’s is where it’s likely the first to be subject to audit by Revenue departments.

Shipping surcharge like adult signature, packaging, special handling are all add-ons that should not be taxed unless this has changed recently and the entire process is considered “Goods AND services”. Blame the world wide internet.

Btw, GAG did not charge me any sales tax, but that was 2019 well before mandated gubmint tax collection on web sales.
GAG did have a flat-rate shipping charge to the FFL…and thinking back now, I should have bought the Edge instead of the StVictor.

Thinking more about it, I recall years ago when buying something on eBay, you’d find someone selling something for $20-$30 less than another seller, then the seller charge you big for S&H. Sellers used to only have to pay their commission to eBay on the items price and not the the final sale price.
eBay caught on to that exploited loophole and changed commission fees to include the S&H. Still wonder if Sellers actually send my tax-dodging IL Gov the funds due to those internet sales?

Also - open for debate…
In IL there is a sales tax rate of 6.25% for general merchandise
and a only 1% sales tax for food/drug/medical appliances.

If and many already have, the local government declares 2A Firearms a national health crisis, shouldn’t firearms be “medical appliances” and be taxed less like say….an arm brace or crutch?

nearly all states now are collecting sales taxes for online purchases.

even Gun Broker, which i used to not get hit with.

what you have to watch for like in my state, is a "convenience fee (tax)", which they hit us for things like DMV services online...!!

it is usually $1.50

sometimes too, they hit us with a "computer upgrade fee".....and that too is like $1.50

so it "can be" $3.00 total we get hit with

we have all become cash cows to our lawmakers, who legalize weed, and now in my state, some socialist state lawmaker, wants to allow immigrants to vote, without being a US Citizens, which right there, is in our state constitution, "one must be a citizen"......nowhere does it say..."immigrant"

Ship via ballon - for free.
Coast to coast and never interrupted…and likely with the current administration ’The Shipper’ will be reimbursed for items being ‘lost/damaged in transit’.

They need to tax us so they can give all the free stuff to people that don't or won't go to work for a living!

Tax when you earn it, tax when you spend it, tax on interest earned if you save or invest it, tax on retirement savings when you withdraw it so you can spend it...
