January 17, 1991 - Operation Desert Shield switched to Desert Storm

Some 35 years ago today Desert Shield switched to Desert Storm. Task Force Normandy, comprising AH-64 Apache helicopters and MH-53 Pave Lows, initiated the attack at 0236 Baghdad time. At 0300 hrs. Baghdad time, a U.S.-led coalition launched Operation Desert Storm, commencing a massive 42-day aerial campaign to liberate Kuwait.

The operation began the 43-day war, with the subsequent ground campaign (Operation Desert Sabre) launching on February 24.
