if you ever saw the movie, he is the commander(??) of the ship the astronauts are rescued by, and he salutes Tom Hanks (playing him)

A true American hero. I had the honor of hearing him speak at a National Fire Protection Association meeting many years ago. He impressed as a good guy and the real deal. Rest in peace.
